Over the past two weeks I’ve been doing some work with virtualization in the context of Virtual Private Server setups - one physical host machine houses several “nodes” that do the actual processing. There are really two types of setups in this field: shared kernel and and separate kernel.
In a strictly shared kernel setup (like FreeBSD), […]

Wow, we did it!

I’ll cut right to the chase: I flew!

This picture doesn’t show it well due to the long grass, but I am in fact flying. (I stalled right after this picture was taken, but that’s beside the point!) This isn’t even with good wind - when the wind was favorable, I flew near half way down […]

This post is divided into two parts: Things I’ve done recently, and things I’ve acquired recently.
Events
Last Sunday I was up at 6am to do communications for the MS walk in Worcester. I didn’t actually need to do anything.
This Sunday I was up at 5am to get to the MIT Swapfest. Usually Ken and I come […]

Getting There

The aforementioned rocket/temperature project has been edited slightly. I’ve changed the max altitude to 2000 feet for two reason: 1) It’s less illegal and 2) I don’t have enough engines for 4000 feet. I’ve also dubbed the project “LATP” for “Low Altitude Temperature Profile”. Here’s a basic graph of what I expect to happen:

Note that […]

I’ve been working on a code in C to solve the Travelling Salesman Problem using Genetic Algorithms. In the past this problem has been attacked using brute force, simply trying every possible passage. Yet as the size of a dataset rises, the computation time increases exponentially with this method, such that a thousand points can […]

Today I set out to clean my lizard’s enclosure. Being a thoroughly boring process, I got to observing the crickets left at the bottom of his cage. They were, as one would expect, following the age old rule for “not very smart” animals: up is out. To empty out these errant critters, I open […]

It worked!
Mike and I took the hovercraft to a small road in the rain and drove (slid) around until the skirt popped. See “hovercraft” on the right, or click here.

Take a look at the rocket-launching location. (I should be able to write up the rockets soon…) The arial photo is very nice!

I’ve been working on coverting a Razor scooter to an electric model. I got a tractor starter motor to use, and two lead acid 12v 5Ah batteries. A friend and I went out and got pulleys and belt, then drilled and screwed about. A few hours later, we came out with a highly “ghetto” […]

I’ve been working on my NBody code for a while now. I WAS getting close to perfect. But something happened, now the particles stop and do crazy things….. see what you think: Movie Here

In the spirit of Sun’s previous release of the x86 Solaris 9 version for $20 to people for personal/learning use, Sun just recently put it’s new Solaris 10 up for download! However, this time, it’s completly free, and the license allows unlimited install!
Included in the great new Solaris 10 is the concept of Zones, […]

After quite a while, people on the MPI mailing list agreed with me and we have an MPI Wiki! It just started, but we should have some intersting articles in a few days. You can find it at: http://www.mpi-comm-world.org/

Cluster Run

The cluster is running my old mpi-prime code (download Here) to get it all tested and working nicely. You can view the bandiwdth graphs at http://www.crepinc.com/cluster/. You can see the nice bandwidth spike, then the inverse exponential curve as the bandwidth decreases because it takes longer to find each number and request a new […]

CAD is cool

I found this great site that gives you CAD software, AND makes the piece for you. Check out http://emachineshop.com. I was able to make the thing below in one evening. There is a catch though… The thing below would be about $100 to have made. However, the more you order, the less the price is.
